Just as one cannot buy a gourmet meal at McDonald’s, or fly first class on EasyJet, one cannot be guaranteed to stay hidden for long on a social network. The concept whereby an individual can maintain confidentiality on a public network is an oxymoron. With internal HR teams monitoring LinkedIn activity of key employees, senior executives need to be very careful with how they treat their online profile on social media. That, of course, triggers an alert to other people in their network that they have amended their profile, a clear signal that will be recognised not just by colleagues, but also by customers, and competitors. Updating the LinkedIn profile is always a clue that someone is probably looking for a move. Even at very senior levels, it is not impossible for unscrupulous recruiters to deliberately share information with a company about a senior executive who might be looking around.ĭo candidates really know who is looking at their profile? I doubt it. It sounds unlikely, but it has been done in the past and it seems there is precious little, if anything, to stop it happening on social media.
In certain circumstances, an employer might even pose as a recruiter or pay a genuine recruiter to look for specific candidates on their behalf.
